Inspiring Fear: The Hole

Even though I was quite excited for this 2009 film* by from kid-film icon Joe Dante, I admit the online reception put me off. So much so that I delayed actually watching The Hole until this past weekend. I came into the movie expecting a mediocre horror tale but, honestly, aside from the rather glaring plot hole (which is forgivable as I think there’s a strong argument for why the characters didn’t), I found The Hole to be rather good—and an excellent resource for Little Fears.

The film follows a familiar setup: two kids move into a new town/new house and stuff happens. In this case, two brothers, Dane and Lucas, find a locked door on the basement floor of the house they’re renting (the latest in a long string of “new houses”). Unable to fight curiosity, they open the door and discover a hole that seems to have no bottom. This prompts further investigation, with interesting results, and builds a mystery as to what could possibly be down there. Along the way, they enlist the girl next door who maybe knows something about the house’s previous tenant.

The movie touches on some rather serious subject matter, which comes to light through the supernatural angle, and moves along at a fair clip. The acting, especially Haley Bennett’s neighbor girl Julie, is quite good and the whole thing builds to a satisfying and personal conclusion. Sure, I could nitpick the film but I honestly don’t see what the bad reviews on IMDb are going on about. Ah well.

I don’t want to spoil anything but I do want to point out that this film features a pitch-perfect glimpse into Closetland. If you’ve struggled to conceptualize what the realm of monsters can look like, watch this film.

The Hole is available in hardcopy as a DVD or Blu-Ray or you can stream it via Netflix or Amazon Instant Video.

*Not to be confused with the 2001 Thora Birch and Keira Knightley film of the same name.

Kickstarter Update

Hey, everyone, just a quick update on the Book 3 Kickstarter. Everything is good to submit to the Kickstarter powers that be except for the sticky subject of international shipping. I need to do a bit more research on that before I send it off for approval. This may take a couple days to figure out worst case scenario on, say, sending three books and a set of dice to Germany or Japan. I want to find a way for those outside of the US to not get gouged on shipping costs.

So, with needing extra time to figure that out and KS needing its time to review the campaign before I can pull the cord, I probably won’t launch the Book 3 Kickstarter until the Monday after GenCon, August 19th.

Also, for those interested, I plan on posting the next Goodie Bags PDF in a few weeks so there be plenty of Little Fears goodness for you all very soon!

Mid-Day Update!
I consulted with some folks and did the math so the international shipping plan has been decided. I updated the Kickstarter and sent it in for submission. I should know something by early next week.

Bringing the Blessed to Life

It’s hard for me to believe it’s been two years since Book 2: Among the Missing hit shelves and that it’s been over a year since I released a new Little Fears Nightmare Edition product. I’d very much like to correct that but, to do so, I’ll need your help.

I’ve always worked on LF products from an investment point of view. I do the work and release it with no forward payment. I’m fine with that but that’s not something I can ask the illustrators I work with to do. And new products, especially a full 128pp book, needs a lot of art. So I’m turning to you to help fund the art for LFNE Book 3: Blessed are the Children.

Blessed are the Children is about the human spirit—literally. It talks about kids whose souls are gone or replaced with the spirit of a monster or who have two souls or whose souls are bolstered by the power of faith. It is about special children with special abilities—abilities that come with a severe cost. They are different than other kids but they are still very much children fighting a war against the overpowering monsters of Closetland.

I’m taking a couple routes in getting this project off the ground.

Kickstarter
I’ll be running a Kickstarter for Blessed are the Children for thirty days starting next Wednesday, August 7th. The goal will be $1500 which will cover all art and production costs for the book. The target is low and whether we hit it or not will be very telling as to whether it’s worth putting Book 3 together. (I sincerely hope it is.)

Normally, I would run a pre-order but I only do that when the art and production costs are covered anyway—that way no one who pre-orders runs the risk of not getting a book. Lacking the art budget, I can’t risk a pre-order that doesn’t cover the cost. The Kickstarter will have multiple tiers for those who wish to support it, including bundles for Books 2 and 3 and Books 1, 2, and 3 and the complete set of LFNE books and all seven Campfire Tales. For those of you who have been asking about dice, some of the tiers will include an opportunity to grab sets as well.

Throughout the Kickstarter, I’ll post excerpts and previews to help build interest. Your support, both monetarily and in spreading the word, will be crucial to the campaign’s success. But Kickstarter isn’t the only way to help support Little Fears!

New Product Line: Goodie Bags
Starting August 5th*, I’m putting out a new line of support products for Little Fears Nightmare Edition. Called Goodie Bags, these are 6-10pp one-off products that focus on new areas and groups that exist in the Little Fears universe. The first two products are about two groups, one existing and one brand-new.

The Butterfly Knights
Introduced in Book 1, the Butterfly Knights are kids in Closetland who help those who get lost within the nightmare realm. In addition to their backstory and plot lines that involve the Knights, their Goodie Bag includes stats to use them as generic or expanded GMCs as well as fully-fleshed Player Characters.

Baba Yaga’s Children
A new group, these monsters are kids twisted by the Crone to become vile, feral creatures who hunt the animals of Closetland—as well as those human children who dare to venture within. Their Goodie Bag includes their backstory, their full Monster stats, and numerous ways to incorporate them into your LFNE game.

Depending on the success of these two, I have other Goodie Bags planned that feature new areas of Closetland, more information on the In-Between World (as introduced in Book 2), and others. They’ll retail in PDF for $5.

New Campfire Tale: The House That Wasn’t There
Coming in September, this standalone episode features a house that only appears in the real world once every seven years. And when it does, it brings some very nasty guests with it.

So, in sum, after a long period of quiet (due to moving, launching Streets of Bedlam, starting a new job, etc), I’m looking to bring some new stuff to the world of Little Fears Nightmare Edition. I hope I can count on your support.

*I’ve had my days screwed up lately. I had written August 3rd originally but it’s next Monday, August 5th.

Inspiring Fear: So Weird

Inspiring Fear once again takes us to the tween wonderland that was 90s television. This time around, it’s the late-90s (its first season began in 1999) “The X-Files for teens” Disney Channel original So Weird.

The premise is just wonderful for a monster-of-the-week style show. Preteen Fiona runs a website dedicated to exploring the supernatural. As she travels the country with her rock star mom Molly Phillips, she comes face-to-face with some new inexplicable oddity, some of which are submitted via her site and some stem from local legends encountered on the road. Along for the ride are Fiona’s tutor (and her mom’s roadie), her mom’s manager (and the roadie’s wife), their teenage son Clu, and Fiona’s skeptical older brother Jack. Jack is the Scully to Fiona’s Mulder and his struggle to understand his sister is a recurrent subplot, as is Fiona’s attempts to prove the existence of the supernatural to Jack. The big secondary plot for the show involves Fiona’s deceased rock star father who may or may not be attempting to contact her from beyond.

The show distinguishes itself from a lot of other tween television with its surprising seriousness and dark tone. Fiona’s cousin replaces her for the show’s third and final season, and the tone lightens a bit in addition to that but So Weird remains a solid show—and a great inspiration for Little Fears.

Unfortunately, So Weird is not officially available on DVD or through any of the commercial streaming services. You can pick up the paperback novelizations or, y’know, *ahem* click the video below. (But don’t tell anybody you heard that from me.)

All Orders Have Shipped!

Hey, everyone! Just wanted you all to know that all Little Fears orders received as of this morning have shipped! If you’ve been waiting (through a restock and a move—sorry!), thank you for your patience! You should all have your books soon.

Outstanding Orders

Just a quick note to those of you waiting on your orders of Little Fears Nightmare Edition and/or Happy Birthday, Little Fears products. I got a rush of orders in March and April that depleted my stock (thank you!) and I put another order in towards the middle of May. I received the books—just in time for my house move! The move is settled now but it’s left a lot of unfulfilled orders. I plan to get through them this week and get everything out in the mail.

I’m very sorry for the delay, and I appreciate your patience.

Support Your Local Game Store

I recently added a new retail partner to the Little Fears family. Please welcome Get Your Fun On. Folks who are local to West Melbourne, Florida should stop by directly. They carry everything I publish and have been fantastic to work with.

For those of you who can’t trek to that part of the Sunshine State, be sure to check the Retailers page to see if there’s a store near you. If your local store doesn’t carry Little Fears (or Streets of Bedlam), I’d love to talk with them. Slide me their name or have them reach out to me directly at Jason@LittleFears.com.

Inspiring Fear: Click

Three boys. Two girls. A decrepit building. A light switch.

I’ve heard folks say the best horror is simple. While some may disagree with that assertion, films like William Prince’s CLICK certainly make a strong argument. This short film runs fourteen minutes and some change and is achingly spartan in its design, concept, and plot. It presents not only a beautiful-in-its-simplicity horror story but a fantastic premise for a Little Fears session. Imagine your group as the kids who investigate the aftermath of this film. I would love to play in that game. Absolutely wonderful.

If you have fifteen minutes to spare, you can watch the entire film below. It’s well worth your time.
