Inspiring Fear: Silver Bullet

In its earliest incarnation, Little Fears was a game about kids fighting werewolves. While it soon ballooned into something much bigger, the game still presented a world perfect for stories about regular folks being terrorized by those most infamous of hirsute moonchasers.

Stories such as the 1985 classic Silver Bullet.

Adapted by Stephen King from his short story “Cycle of the Werewolf,” Silver Bullet tells the tale of a small town turned on its head by a series of gruesome murders. Originally thought to be the work of a psychopath, details come to light suggesting there might be more to these attacks than initially suspected. As the killings continue, and a child becomes one of the victims, the townsfolk get fed up with the seeming ineffectiveness of the local police force and decide to enact some “private justice” which both the town sheriff and local preacher struggle to keep in check.

Our viewpoint character for most of this—and our Little Fears connection—is a paralyzed boy who becomes the first to discover the truth about what’s going on, a fact his older sister and trusted uncle are both hesitant to believe.

The film boasts an array of familiar faces, with notables such as Bill Smitrovich, Terry O’Quinn, Corey Haim, and Gary Busey, who all turn in fine performances. The werewolf isn’t the greatest (which reportedly was a source of annoyance for the film’s producer) but it’s a solid romp in the traditional breezy/folksy style King is known for) and is perfect for a traditional-style Little Fears one-shot.

A hardcopy of Silver Bullet appears to be hard to track down nowadays (unless you’re looking for a copy for your Beta player) but you can stream it via Amazon or Netflix* which is what I did this past Friday night.

(*Many thanks to Little Fears superfan Jack O’Tears for the heads up.)

(I originally credited the source story as “Cry of the Werewolf” instead of “Cycle of the Werewolf. Thanks to Victor for the correction!)

Dice Order Placed!

I have received notice from Chessex that payment has been processed and the dice are in the queue for production. Excellent. Very excited! I’ll update you all when the dice are in-hand. It may be a bit out since they’re rushing to fill a bunch of GenCon orders.

Coming Soon: CAMPFIRE TALES #8

Hot on the heels of #7’s release, here’s the cover to Campfire Tales #8: The House That Wasn’t There. I’ve toyed with haunted house stories in that past, and concocted some alright ones, but I really wanted to explore the idea with this new installment. I’m aiming for early August as a release date. I’ll let you all know a firmer date when I feel I have a target I can hit (and not have to delay a bunch of times). Anyway, here’s a preview of the cover, again by the incredible Veronica Jones.

Whew. Just under the wire.

The newest Campfire Tale is now available on DriveThruRPG and RPGNow:

Summer is the best time ever. No more pencils, no more books, you know the deal. And this year, it’s going to be extra-awesome because you’re spending two weeks at Camp Howland Rolf where you’ll be swimming, playing sports, running around like crazy, fending off the attacks of ravenous woodland creatures…

Wait—what was that last part again?

“Camp Howling Wolf” is just $5 for a full standalone episode including three new monsters and six new GMCs for use with this or any Little Fears Nightmare Edition episode.

I hope you enjoy this new episode! If you get a chance to play it, please let me know what you think.

Campfire Tales #7 Gets A(nother) Delay

A sudden illness made its way through the family and ate up the time I was going to spend finishing Campfire Tales #7. Please forgive me as I push it back another week. I’m invoking my standard been-pushed-back-too-many-times guarantee: If I miss that deadline, I’m releasing it free. In addition, those who pre-ordered the dice will get #8 free along with it.

See you in a week!

Dice Orders (and Other Orders Too)

To everyone who ordered Little Fears dice, I have submitted the order to get that ball rolling. I hope to have them on-hand inside the month but I’ll let you all know if there are any delays. I’ll keep the pre-order going until Campfire Tales #7 releases (still looking like Wednesday from here) so you still have some time to get your orders in and get a free episode along with it.

If you ordered books along with the dice, I’ve been waiting until the dice order was done to ship them out. If you absolutely can’t wait (and I understand if you can’t), send me an email at jason@littlefears.com. Feel free to CC my main address as well (jasonlblair@gmail.com) if the matter is urgent.

As you might know I’m in the middle of an out-of-state move that has thrown all manner of monkeywrenches into my gears. Some things have slipped but I’m trying my best to catch up. I have a handful of orders that need shipped, for instance. I have them packed up and ready to go. I plan to stop by the post office tomorrow and get all not-including-dice orders out then.

I’m headed back to Madison this weekend where I’ll grab all the Little Fears stock so I have it at the new place and can ship everything out more quickly. Once everything is settled with the move, and the summer season of Campfire Tales, and the Streets of Bedlam products I still need to refine and get out, I aim to get something pretty special started for Little Fears. But more on that later.

Campfire Tales #7 Delayed

It’s always something. This time around, I’ve been handling so much stuff with relocating and starting the new job (and traveling from the old place to the new place and back) that I need to push back the release date to next week, July 11th. My sincerest apologies!

Inspiring Fear: Zombie Playground

Little Fears fan Jack_Of_Tears posted this to the Yahoo!Group but I had to share it as well.

World-renowned concept and illustration studio Massive Black is currently running a Kickstarter to launch an online co-op game called Zombie Playground. This stuff is pure Little Fears. We have child protagonists, improvised weapons made from school supplies and stuff laying around, and some really cool-looking graphics all set inside a school overrun by the walking dead.

As the reps say in the video below, Zombie Playground is not for children. There’s lot of gore and violence in the game. But as an adult gamer, I love the concept and the style of the game seems top-notch.

Massive Black has already met their goal so the Kickstarter’s success is guaranteed but there’s still time to join in, make a pledge, secure your copy of the game, and maybe snag a few cool exclusive. If the concept sounds interesting to you, check out the video below. You can read the full pitch, and make your pledge, at the official KS page.

With the dice pre-order running until next Friday, I’m looking to kick off the summer season the following Wednesday—just in time for a major US holiday!

Stay tuned for more details!

Also, a gentle reminder that the Campfire Tales are going to bump from $2 per to $5 per episode once #7 goes live, so if you’re looking to fill out your collection or try some on the cheap get them now!
