Telegraph.co.uk recently ran an article about how folklore and fairy tales may have roots that go back further than previous thought. Dr. Jamie Tehrani, a cultural anthropologist at Durham University studied 35 versions of “Little Red Riding Hood” from around the world, one dating to BC. The same story, repeated through the ages and across the globe, shows the roots of a shared culture, a universality to the human experience that I think fits very well with the concept of collective fear creating a place like Closetland. Very interesting stuff.
Dr. Jamie Tehrani will be presenting his work tomorrow at the British Science Festival. I’d love to hear this talk!
For those like me, you’ll have to settle for this small article until someone posts a video.
Though it doesn’t deal exclusively with kids fighting monsters, the trailer for Funcom’s upcoming modern-day horror game THE SECRET WORLD features an adversary reminiscent of a certain bird-like fellow. I’m not much into the MMORPG scene but I’m certainly intrigued by this. I may just check it out when it goes live. If you’re interested in more information, visit their website to take the admissions test.
For now, enjoy the trailer.

With 49% of the vote, the original Little Fears monster you’d like to see return in the Nightmare Edition is Patchwork the Dollmaker! The sick boy who spends his time in the “hospital” making dolls for the monsters wins the poll and will be in the new book.
Pick up the game when it’s released to see how the young patient is doing.
Well, not exactly, but this Russian monument to children and the dangers that await them is certainly within the realm of Little Fears. As you can see in the center, there are two golden children playing. Statues representing alcoholism, drug abuse, thievery, child labor, and the like surround them. It’s an incredibly interesting monument and any of those outer statues could be great inspiration for a Monster!
If anyone has more information about this monument, I’d love to hear it! Use the comments below.
